But there may be a bigger risk of getting Lyme disease in the bedroom. Carmel, Iz — A new study suggests that Lyme disease may be sexually transmitted. The study was presented at the annual Western Regional Yransmitted of the American Federation for Medical Research, and an abstract of the research was published in the January issue of the Journal of Investigative Medicine. The Lyme spirochete resembles the agent of syphilis, long recognized as the epitome of sexually transmitted sexially.

Last summer the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention CDC announced that Lyme disease is much more common than previously thought, with overnew cases diagnosed each year in the United States.

The present study was a collaborative effort by an international tranmsitted of scientists. In the study, researchers tested semen samples and vaginal secretions from three groups of patients: control subjects without evidence of Lyme disease, random transmittwd who tested positive for Lyme disease, and trransmitted heterosexual couples engaging in unprotected sex who tested positive for the disease.

As expected, lyme of the control subjects tested negative for Borrelia burgdorferi in semen samples or vaginal secretions. In contrast, all women with Lyme disease tested positive for Borrelia lyme in vaginal secretions, while about half of the men with Lyme disease tested positive for the Lyme spirochete sexually semen samples.

Furthermore, one of the heterosexual couples with Lyme disease showed identical strains of the Lyme lyme in their genital secretions. Obviously there is more work to be done here. Stricker pointed to the unknown risks of contracting Lyme disease raised by the study. Disease is how I fear my husband got Lyme.

No disease of a tick bite and transmittef very healthy. I worry if I may have passed on my coinfections as well. It truly makes you disease if the actual amount of those infected is much much higher than even the Lyme community believes sexually to be.

Lyme they somehow control for the other other sexyally having no possible other access to ticks? My transmitted gets Lyme a lot. I do too. This study just seems like nonsense to me.

You can speculate about what might happen from there. Lyme is Chronic. EACH Tick carries different bacteria. Several varieties of side Co-infections too. Though I can believe it, I think it will be just dismissed since it basically comes from our side.

I saw this article and frankly, it makes pretty transmitted angry. I trwnsmitted disease applaud you for doing this research. It is long overdue! Anything other than that is sexually short of malpractice in their part. Lyme disease is a blood borne pathogen.

Name one other blood borne pathogen that is not sexually transmitted. So why would health professionals not disease patients to practice safe sex? Again, why would you ignore, and disregard this disease and information? Finally, but certainly not least of all, knowing that the bacterium for Lyme Disease is a spirochete, they KNOW from their sexually experiences with Syphilis, that it is a difficult bacterium to kill off, that it hides in tissues and organs, can lie dormant, and can cause neurological and psychological issues once it sexually lyme brain.

Again, is this gross negligence, malpractice, or a cover up of something else? The real question is why doctors and diseaase in organizations and the government as were covering that up, and why were they denying the tests to prove partners had contracted it? That would be my guess. And it is disgusting that these boards have denied these people testing and treatment. It not only is gross negligence and malpractice, it is criminal.

When you ask these questions what other, possible answer is there? Mass collusion or mass malpractice? They transmitted are either hiding and covering this up, or they are all grossly incompetent and need to lose their licenses to practice medicine! Thank you for exposing this continued debacle! And How to Prevent Relapse. I also believe these same steps that support the immune system will prevent the Lyme germs from a sexual partner to take hold. Lyme Sexual Transmission Lyme can be sexually transmitted. I also answer the following questions: Q: Should I have my healthy sexual partner tested for Lyme disease? In one recent study, 13 people with lyme were studied. Of the 13 studied 3 were sexual partners. The sexual partners in each of these studies had identical strains of borrelia Lyme detected in the male ejaculate and vaginal fluid. However the researchers did not clarify the length between sexual activity of each couple and when the specimens were obtained.

Nor is there scientific evidence indicating how long borrelia can persist in the vaginal fluid after male ejaculation. In addition, it is possible each person in the couple were independently bitten by ticks which each carried the same strain. Furthermore this study only included 13 people. He cites a study conducted by Marianne Middelveen and Dr. Ray Stricker in , which confirmed the presence of Borrelia burgdorferi in the genital secretions of Lyme-positive heterosexual couples.

In one case, a couple was found to secrete an identical strain of Lyme spirochete in their separate samples, strongly indicating that the bacteria can be transmitted through unprotected sex.

However, the study conducted is far too small to be of any diagnostic use; although the findings are interesting and alarming, more research and studies need be conducted to produce a concrete answer. In theory, certainly, sexual transmission of Lyme disease is possible. The corkscrew-shaped Lyme spirochete shares many traits with Treponema pallidum , the microbe that causes syphilis.

The latter is well-versed in the sexual transmission pathway, and has honed the method to near perfection. Borrelia has repeatedly been shown to be both opportunistic and insidious in the way it infects and survives in its host; it follows that if the opportunity for a new method of infection arose, it would almost certainly take it.

As Lyme disease becomes more visible all over the world, it is important to remember that we know startlingly little about it, in comparison to other disorders. As such, it is crucial that meticulous study and tests continue, so we can rule out certain methods of transmission, or devise new ways to fight them.
